The Future of the Mobile Phone Industry

Every other commercial seems to be promoting the latest phone, featuring faster network and data speeds, more storage, and better cameras. Where will the next advancement in the mobile phone industry take us? Here are Issa asad's top trends right now with cell phones that we can certainly expect more of in the future.

Better Imaging Quality

This counts for phone cameras and screen resolution, both of which have made immense progresses in recent years. The most recent, and possibly most astonishing advancement in cell phone camera technology is the introduction of a 41-megapixel camera, found on the new Nokia Lumia 1020. 41-megapixels is far more than every other camera phone on the market, and is actually more than most point and shoot and DSLR cameras, making the Nokia Lumia 1020 the best camera you can buy. A major draw to cell phones is the quality of their camera, and this one has certainly created a lot of buzz, and has pushed other cell phone manufacturers to improve their cameras as well.

Augmented Reality

A relatively new advancement in cell phone technology, we saw this introduced with Google’s “Goggles”, allowing the user to see real time data in the world around them. Further advances in this area are projected to release in the near future, most likely being adapted for cell phone use, allowing users to get real-time information about the world around them.

Computer Replacement

The way cell phones are advancing, it is safe to say that in the future there will be no practical need for desktop computers—a fascinating notion, considering there were relatively recently introduced. Technological advances in the past thirty years seem miniscule compared to what will happen in the next 5-10 years—seemingly advanced technology will become obsolete, and common devices such as computers will no longer be useful. The pace of technological advancement is ever quickening.

Mobile Cloud Technology

Cloud technology has revolutionized the way we use and network computers, allowing multiple computers to run and use the same data, instead of storing it on a single hard drive. Implementing cloud on mobile devices will further increase efficiency and networking, and is already available with Google’s Gmail and Apple’s MobileMe.

5G Technology

A new generation of cell phone technology arrives approximately every decade, so 5G technology can expect to be seen by 2020, and will greatly increase the speed of data usage in mobile phones—some predict speeds of up to 1 gigabyte per second.

Increased Security

Cell phones are becoming more and more elaborate and expensive, making the security of the phone an even higher priority than before. There is talk of implementing biometrics in order to access the cell phone, something that would greatly improve security of consumers. There are already biometrically secured laptops available, so the implementation into cell phones is not far off.

What does this mean?

The future of mobile phones is bright and fast, with new advances being developed daily. Technology is becoming more compact and powerful, and soon your cell phone will be the most technologically advanced item you own.
